LWI Region 5 Mermentau Headwaters - HEC-RAS Simulation: Gustav 2008 Validation
On September 1, 2008, Hurricane Gustav made landfall 70 miles southwest of New Orleans as a category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour. Gustav moved inland across south-central Louisiana and dropped to tropical storm status on the evening of September 1. An estimated 1.9 million Louisiana residents evacuated from Southeastern Louisiana in preparation for Hurricane Gustav in anticipation of significant storm flooding. Heavy rainfall was seen in the greater Baton Rouge and New Orleans areas (NWS n.d.a). The period of September 1 to September 10, 2008, was modeled in HEC-RAS. Hurricane Gustav was a tropical event with a short storm duration.
This is the Gustav2008 validation flood run for the Mermentau Headwaters combined model. The hydrology for this event is derived from HEC-HMS model developed by HDR for Mermentau Headwaters region.
