LWI Region 5 Mermentau Headwaters - HEC-RAS Simulation: August 2016 Validation
In August 2016, Southeast Louisiana experienced a non-tropical event with a short storm duration. The event brought heavy rainfall to the gulf coast. The heavy rainfall caused widespread flash flooding, which resulted in numerous water rescues and 13 deaths. In addition to the loss of life, the flooding caused damage to over 50,000 structures and caused closures on Interstates 10 and 12 for several days (NWS n.d.c, NWS n.d.d). The period of August 11 to August 28, 2016, was modeled in HEC-RAS. This is the August 2016 validation flood run for the Mermentau Headwaters combined model. The hydrology for this event is derived from HEC-HMS model developed by HDR for Mermentau Headwaters region.
